It's not compulsory to use silpat mats. In the beginning, I used teflon paper and silicon paper to bake and still succeds. But then again, I would say that silpat gives a better result.
aunty, may i ask, those candy u used are 'hundreds and thousands' is it? have you seen those that come only in a mixture of two colours eg. pink and white, or yellow and orange instead of so many colors mixed together? thanks!

There's no special equipment tho... What I used was a plain round nozzle and a piping bag.
