Hainanese Banana Leaf Kueh

Hainanese called this "Ee Puah"....which means "round plate" because of it's round shape. The filling is fresh grated coconut fried with gula melaka and mixed with some ground peanuts but Oops....I forgot the peanuts and my mum was not too happy with my tweak in her authentic kueh. Nonetheless, this is really delicious...sorry "Cranberry" aka Jestina...you waited so long for this.

Hi Aunty Yochana

Thanks for your reply and I will be trying your egg tarts tomorrow. Thereafter, I will try out some other incl.light fruit cake which I intend to make for Xmas! ^^
Btw, I'm a Hainanese and my dad loves this kueh. Mum, sis or I will get some for dad if we happen to see this kueh. Can you give me the recipe? I think dad will be happy if sis and I can make this kueh for him. Thanks again!

Hi Aunty,

I am Hainanese too and my family loves Ee Buah. None knows how to make it though... We often stop by the Hainanese coffee shop at Liang Seah St to get our supply. Pls pls share this recipe. My Mom will love it. Thank you.

Hi Aunty Yochana

Is your mum a Hainanese? I gather you must be an Indonesian Chinese.
I'm Hainanese and I used to eat these when I was young. During those days in the kampong, such kuehs were given out during baby's first month, engagements etc. It will be more authentic to add in bits of ginger as well.
BTW, I have not recd any of the recipes I requested so far. Tks very much for your response.

yup definately a hainanese clan alright we have here...it just shows how good food does bring us closer.
Me too 100% pure hainan just like u aunty. I think me too got a bit of flat head ...hahahaha

My mom usually pan fry the ee puah when there leftover from fridge cause the skin is usually harden by then ...and the crispyness after frying does do justice to the taste...

hehehe i do know how yr mom feels bout the missing peanuts...cause i would not want them to be missing fm my ee buah as well but neverthe less the ones u made looks delicious as well.

I remembered I had this when I was little in Vietnam. I also tried this with the mung bean filling, they all are yum. Do you mind to share this recipe? Million Thanks!

Hi,
I was doing a web search, and I came across your blog. A sad reality is that a lot of our tradition is being lost. I am a Hainanese, and am looking for places where I can buy 'yee puah' for my daughter's one month celebration. Do you have any recommendations?
My family and I enjoyed these cakes in the 'good old days', and I would want to keep this part of the tradition alive.

Regards,
Pang

Hi aunty yochana

Would appreciate if you could share with all of us your hainanese "ee puah" kueh. Want to try making them for my mother in law who is a hainanese. She used to order from another of the same clan but lost touch of her for some years. Wouldnt it be great if i can make them for her instead?

Thanks

Aunty :
share a joke with you.
was just asking my Mom yterday casually if she remembered my late maternal granny making the 'ee puah".
The conversation ended wif my Mom getting 'worried' about the storage and quantity i may end up making. had a good laff. =p
p.s. i dun even hv any idea how to make the kueh. =D

btw, Aunty, wat do u think is the best way to preserve the freshly grated coconut ? add pinch of salt n place in fridge ?

Aunty Yochana said...

Hi yan,

That's funny....

For grated coconut, steam with some salt for 5 mins. cool it and chill in the fridge. It helps to prolong it's life span but it turns sour after some time, depending on how cold your fridge is. I've not tried with putting in the freezer till it's needed but I can roughly say that it should work.
