Kek Lumut




Ingredients:

250 gm. Butter
90 gm. sugar
1/2 Tbsp. ovalette
5 egg yolks
190 gm. condensed milk
150 gm. Kaya
120 gm. cake flour - sieved
100 gm. horlicks
5 egg white
1/2 tbsp. pandan paste
2 1/2 Tbsp. Pandan juice

Method:

(1) Beat butter, sugar and ovalette till creamy. Add in egg yolks one at a time and beat till well combined.
(2) Add in condensed milk and kaya a little at a time and beat till properly mixed.
(3) Add in flour and horlicks. Add in pandan paste and pandan juice.
(4) Whisk egg white till soft peak and then fold into butter mixture.
(5) Pour into a 8" square tin and cover with an aluminium foil. Steam for 2 hours or till cooked.
(6) Cool before slicing.

Dear Aunty,

Lumut means seaweed in Malay right? Is this a seaweed cake?

Jam,

I didn't know that lumut is seaweed in malay. Learnt something today. No there is not seaweed in this cake. It has kaya and horlicks...very delicious. Recipe can be found in Vickie Chieng's book - Layered Cake.

Hi Yochana,
In Indonesian languange lumut means mildew.
If you see mildew is green and soft. Hope this help :)

I've not tried substituting horlicks with anything... Horlicks is malt and it's very fragrant.

I'm too lazy to make kaya myself so I just go to the shop to buy a bottle otherwise it's too tedious just to make a cake.

heee, making kaya for my buddies .. they love kaya, so its a good reason for me to make for them, so i can bake this kek lumut ... bought all ingredients, see got time to make it today cos kaya is on the way in the breadmaker already using zu's recipe
