Bistro Cake

Dear Aunty Yochana,

I realised I've left quite a number of comments without introducing myself. I'm a student currently studying my last year at university. I really like to bake although I don't have much time and my family doesn't eat much sweets, so I can't make a lot of cakes and cookies. I love reading your blog and I hope I can learn much from you.
Why is this called Bistro Cake? Is it a cake recipe from a bistro? Is it chocolate? It looks like it but I'm not too sure.
Thanks.

Jam,

Seems like you are the same age as my daughter. My daughter is also in the uni - last year. (3rd year).

I don't know why the author called it Bistro but this cake contains a lot of horlicks and some browning sauce.

Good Morning Aunty Yochana,

I saw your group pic for IK and i am still wondering which one of them is you?? I meant to ask you if this is similar to Bee hive cake using lots of caramelized brown sugar?

I enjoy your baking everyday but too bad you are living in town.

Thanks so so much for giving us the inspiration and for sharing with us.

Dear Aunty Yochana,

Oh, I think I'm probably a year older than your daughter because I'm taking a 4-year course. Does your daughter learn baking from you?

Isn't browning sauce used in BBQ or grilled meats? So strange to see it as a cake ingredient. No wonder it looks so chocolate brown.

Hi Kate,

This recipe is from the book "Layered Cake" by Vickie Chieng. Do you have that book?

HI Jam,

The browning sauce is not the BBQ sauce. It's a sauce that is specially for making steam cakes.

Dear Aunty Yochana,

Oops sorry for being ignorant. Thanks for clarifying. Where did you buy this sauce? Is it used because steamed cakes will not naturally brown like baked cakes?

Hi dizzy,

I'm the one standing near the oven.

the Bistro cake is very much different from the bee hive cake or caramel cake. This cake used a lot of horlicks.

O.K. Jam,

I will post a picture of the browning sauce (comes from England). These browning sauce can be bought from KL or Sarawak. It is used for this cake because we want the black jack look.
