Ensaymada
My maid "Gina", taught me this and how to twist it. I was told that they only make this once a year during Christmas. I asked her why and her reply was "because it's round mam"....my reply "Huh" ....I set into deep thinking and think to myself that maybe because it looks like money which means "Great Fortune" thoroughout the year. Anybody out there knows why? Do share with us....
Hello Aunty, if your maid comes from the Philippines which a lot of commercial ensaymada abounds. Usually, we have the belief to make round foods or place round fruits imitating money. Its a belief to us that this will bring in a lot of money. :)

ReplyDeleteThe ensaïmada comes from Mallorca (Spain) where it symbolises fertility. It is not knotted. In fact it is a spiral.
Ensaymada spelt with a y would be the Philippine spelling. Ensaïmada means larded, where saïm is the Mallorcan word for lard.
